“The Man Who Planted Trees,” dir. Frederic Back (CBC-Radio Canada, 1987). Based on the classic tale by French poet Jean Giono, which tells the story of Elzear Bouffier, a solitary shepherd who, though he has “lost the habit of speech,” transforms a barren, war-ravaged landscape into a lush forest and verdant valley by his patient responsiveness to and care for the earth. A quietly prophetic visual parable of our elemental relationship with, attunement to, and responsibility for the Earth.
The real-life story of Jadev Payeng, a man who has dedicated his life to planting trees.
