Race, The Masculine and The Feminine

Only in the group (two or more) am I Real. Asked by the officers of the Religious establishment when to expect the coming of paradise, Jesus is purported to have said: “It does not admit of observation and there will be no one to say ‘Look, it is here! Look, it is there! For look, it is among you.’

The Real, Conscious Being, the Heart-Mind-in-communion, is the process, as a flow state, of observing which differentiates and unites its own being as observer and observed. The Orders of being brought about in this process are as follows: The Imaginary is the Image of the Real – both the One and the Other. It is a subtle inter-subjective energetic pattern arising from luminous darkness (uncreated Light).  The Real is the gross energetic manifestation of the Imaginary AND the unknowable, undifferentiated open spaciousness of Being itself – the Other: The pregnant void, a ‘Relational’ connectivity. The Symbolic is the articulated form of consciousness (uncreated Sound,  Word) i.e. Mind.

In terms of evolution, the One has been articulated as the Masculine, an active, creative energy while the Other has been articulated as the Feminine, the Relational context (dark energy and matter) from which the Masculine arises. As human being the personal self is articulated in consciousness as the Symbolic construct ‘I’ and all else is ‘other’. ‘Mind’ is the perspective which consciousness (observing) takes, via the Symbolic, on the Real and the Imaginary. Through flow, the observer encounters the particular form of their being as an effect of their discourse – the  Symbolic.

The Hieros Gamos is the symbol of a spiritual reality – the divine fire in the arc of the covenant between the two cherubs, the union of wisdom and compassion. We find it too in some of the Christian Mystics as for instance in Mechthild of Magdeburg.

Teilhard de Chardin writes:                                        “The Presence of the incarnate Word penetrates everything as a universal element. It shines at the common heart of things as a center that is infinitely intimate to them and at the same time ……..infinitely distant.”

“Someday, after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of Love, and then, for a second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire.”    

The Real is the relation of subjectivity and objectivity, the flow of Eros-Agape. The evolutionary spiritual journey is one of progressively articulating the Symbolic more accurately (becoming more conscious) so as to reflect our true nature, the Real, which is the Heart-Mind-in-communion, the interface of consciousness and being.  We progressively appropriate this knowledge (gnosis) collectively and individually through Life itself. Inquiry  prayer, meditation and contemplation are forms of appropriation of meaning.  Flow brings clarity and freedom.

Evolution has a direction: the Real unfolds as an ever more perfect union and finely articulated differentiation. In the 21st Century this means a more finely differentiated, articulated and incorporated Feminine, the Other, the alien – a making space for the other beside us.

Characteristically, the mysterious, the strange and stranger, the open unknowable, is the lure of desire. If not appropriated it is ‘the fear of God’, the shadow, the unconscious, the underworld.  We have to progress far down the path of surrender and acceptance before the flow is free.

It is not surprising therefore that Race is one of the frontiers of the unknown, a cultural inter-subjective other and Other. Until we engage fear of Other in ourselves we are not capable of a true encounter with Other, an aspect of the Divine. We exclude the mystery to be found in strange and unwanted places and the love at the heart of all being.

The winter Sun flares through the window pane, a glare illuminating the frost with brilliant light, the world outside a tantalizing shadow-reflection through the glass: A Crystal shimmering of light, space, shadow. The sound of silence. The Double Diamond of the Heart-Mind-in-communion.
